What is an Incisional Hernia?
An incisional hernia develops at the site of a previous abdominal surgical scar. It occurs when the abdominal wall fails to heal completely, allowing internal tissues to protrude through the weakened area.
Causes and Risk Factors
- Previous abdominal surgery
- Wound infection after surgery
- Obesity
- Diabetes
- Smoking
- Chronic cough
- Poor wound healing
Swelling or bulge at or near a surgical scar
Discomfort or pain, especially on straining
Gradually increasing size of swelling
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is usually clinical. CT scan may be advised in larger or complex hernias to assess size and contents.
Treatment
Surgical repair is the recommended treatment. Depending on size and complexity, options include:
- Open mesh repair
- Laparoscopic repair
The surgical approach is determined after detailed evaluation.
Possible Complications (If Untreated)
Enlargement over time
Intestinal obstruction
Strangulation (rare but serious)
Early evaluation allows better planning and improved outcomes.
